A Greek Tragedy

Dan

Christmas is coming! It's the first day of Advent, and 24 days of awesome freebies and packs have begun in CUE - find out more in yesterday's news.

As well as today's FREE Nutcracker card, you can head into the store to find new Greek Mythology packs!

Look, we're no experts, but if you'd gotten into a relationship with someone who claimed to be the king of the gods, you'd want to verify that claim before you fell pregnant, right? The trouble is, looking upon a god causes you to combust in Greek Mythology.

Such is the conundrum at the heart of the myth of Semele. A priestess of Zeus, she falls pregnant with his child after they have an affair. The vengeful Hera, Zeus's wife, tricks her into forcing Zeus to reveal his godhood to her. He obliges, extremely reluctantly, and causes her to burst into flames but, fortunately, saves the child, who grows up to be Dionysus, the god of wine, merriment and the rager.

You can play out this tragic tale, sort of, with the new Hera, Semele and Dionysus cards today!

A note about Christmas cards

In the last couple of years, we've released loads of cards over the holiday period - not just those in the Festive Traditions collection, but the Christmas-themed cards in the Specials collections too. We know that a lot of value has been ascribed to these cards, and there's a cachet to having been there at the beginning when they first came out.

However, one of CUEs core values is that we don't want any card to be truly unavailable to anyone. Those cards have never been completely out of reach because there has been a chance to get them in all sorts of packs throughout the year (and trading is a thing), but we haven't specifically re-released any of these cards in the past out of respect for users who got them the first time.

We won't be re-releasing them this year either - but we might next year. We're letting you know now because we don't want it to be a surprise if we decide to re-release those cards.

(And, let's face it, they could probably do with some sprucing up and this would give us a wonderful opportunity to make them playable. Or do you want to play a 10/83 no-ability French Hen forever? ;) )

UPDATE - the above said, there will be limited (Free!) opportunities to get Christmas cards throughout Advent.
