Another batch of Fears and Phobias cards have appeared to terrify the masses! So we’ve decided to dissect those tricky names and look at what’s really freaking you out this Halloween season. Plus, an extra bonus fear that just makes our skin crawl.
Phobophobia
You may have heard that you have nothing to fear but fear itself but for some people, that’s more than enough. If you’re afraid of being afraid, you may be afflicted with Phobophobia - the fear of fear. If even the thought of a horror movie or a trip to a haunted house fills you with dread, don’t worry, we won’t force you to watch IT or A Quiet Place with us. We’ll get you all wrapped up in a big blanket and it’ll only be family friendly comedies for you from now on. We promise. (Heehee, more scary stuff for us!!!)
Automatonophobia
The phrase “uncanny valley” comes to mind with Automatonophobia. This is fear of things that look human but aren’t. Mannequins, statues, dolls. All those freaky things that you’re convinced have eyes that follow you round the room. There is something creepy about these things - the way they appear close to lifelike but there’s something just off or not quite right about them. Enough to give you the shivers. Maybe take care on any trips to Disney World - we don’t think you’ll enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean…or the Carousel of Progress…or the Haunted Mansion…and let’s not even think about It’s a Small World. In fact, that’s it. No trips to Disney for you. You’re welcome.
Bonus Fear! - Wiccaphobia
Do you hate pointed hats, black cats and broomsticks? Sounds like you’re either a 17th Century Puritan or you have Wiccaphobia. This fear of witchcraft dates back hundreds of years from the witch trials to fairy tales and even to the more modern Satanic Panic. We don’t think you’ve got much to fear today though, most contemporary witches are more likely to give you a tarot reading and some healing crystals than a curse so we think you’ll be okay!
