Arguably one of the most badass weapons around, the Naginata is a curved sword mounted on a pole used by warrior priests circa 750 A.D. Although it wasn’t designed with women in mind, this blade proved to be the perfect weapon for female self defence during the Sengoku Jidai period.
While men were away at war, women threatened with raiding and pillaging could quickly reach for the naginata, taking advantage of its sharp blade and long reach to defend themselves at close quarters.
Over time, this weapon came to symbolise female virtue in Japan and was even given to brides as wedding presents. Because nothing says “cheers to the happy couple” like a massive Japanese sword.
