Long before Elsa was the It Girl of ice magic, The Snow Queen was the one to watch in the world of winter fairytales. Written by Hans Christian Anderson, the seven-part-story was first published in the run up to Christmas, 1845. In the story, a girl named Gerda must cross mountains, forests and hills to reach the Snow Kingdom to save her friend Kay who has been kidnapped by the Snow Queen.
Legend has it that the author was inspired by Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind, who he met in 1840. Andersen confessed his love to Lind, but she was not interested in him romantically. The ice-cold rejection led the author to model the Snow Queen on the singer, although Lind never kidnapped any children (that we know of.)
