Back when Ptolemy was around, he listed Argo Navis as one of the 48 constellations and named it after the legendary shop that carried Jason and the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece in Greek mythology. Hundreds of years later, Nicolas Louis de Lacaille divided Argo up into three constellations: Carina (the keel), Puppis (the “poop deck”) and Vela (the sails.)The brightest star in the constellation is Canopus, which is the second-brightest star in the night sky and served as an important navigational marker for sailors in the southern hemisphere.
