Meet the California Condor, the avian world's answer to a flying American President.
Meet the California Condor, the avian world's answer to a flying American President. Sporting a stylish black-and-white ensemble topped with a striking orange bald head, this bird is giving "Air Force One" a whole new meaning. But if we needed any more proof that humans excel at messing things up, this bird is Exhibit A.
Despite a potential lifespan of 60 years, it was declared extinct in the wild in 1987, thanks to our usual suspects: poaching, lead poisoning, and habitat destruction. In a Lazarus-like comeback, conservationists played matchmaker, capturing the last wild condors for a breeding program, and by 1991, they were reintroduced to the wild.
Yet despite these efforts, the California Condor remains critically endangered, with a global population of just 561.
