Marking the birth of the United States of America, the Declaration of Independence had three goals: to rally the troops, to win foreign allies and to announce the creation of a new country.
Sadly, rumours about a hidden treasure map or secret code on the back of the Declaration of Independence aren’t true – however, there is actually something written on the reverse side. It reads: “Original Declaration of Independence dates 4th July 1776.” Pretty anticlimactic, right? However, contrary to this label, the declaration wasn’t signed on July 4th, 1776. Although this is the date it was adopted and finalised, the majority of the signers got round to signing the Declaration of Independence on August 2nd.
