Field of the Cloth of Gold

Like many diplomatic summits fueled by ego, The Field of the Cloth of Gold accomplished very little.

In 1520, two of history's most extra monarchs decided to host the world's most expensive game of 'mine is bigger than yours’. Henry VIII and Francis I basically turned a field in France into a showcase of obscene wealth, complete with a temporary palace covering 12,000 square yards and fountains that poured red wine. They even had gold-covered monkeys entertaining guests at banquets.

However, like many diplomatic summits fueled by ego, The Field of the Cloth of Gold accomplished very little. Despite the 2,200 sheep consumed and countless displays of opulence, the whole thing went sideways when Henry lost a wrestling match to Francis.

Within a year, England had allied with Charles V against France, making this extravagant peace summit about as effective as a chocolate teapot.
