Born from the star-crossed union of a male llama and a female alpaca, the Huarizo is a fluffy little accident. A biological dead-end, huarizos were never meant to multiply – although scientists at the University of Minnesota are now attempting to pick the genetic lock, determined to mass-produce more confused camelids. The poor sods can’t even form their own herds, doomed to loiter awkwardly with Mum and Dad forever.

Still, they inherit the best traits from both parents: the laid-back attitude of llamas and the plush fibre of alpacas. Yet, despite their premium fleece, they’ve failed to make a dent in the wool industry, probably because people are hesitant to wrap themselves in a luxurious scarf woven from a creature that shouldn’t exist.
