After the second world war, Americans became absolutely obsessed with putting jet engines on things. Locomotives, submarines, aeroplanes, surfboards - you name it. If it could move, it could be powered by a jet engine - that was the logic. Today, it’s well accepted that the Jet Car is just too dangerous and gas-guzzling to be practical - but in the mid 20th century, it was a different story.
When British car company Rover launched the first usable road vehicle powered by a gas turbine engine in 1946, people lost their minds. Inspired by the Gloster Meteor fighter jet aircraft, Rover’s jet car exceeded speeds of 150mph. More modern jet dragsters such as Robert Albertson's "Blazing Angel" are capable of reaching over 300 miles per hour in a quarter of a mile.
