It can be a lot to grapple with (teehee) but Jiu Jitsu is a martial arts style which dates back to Japan in 1530. It’s a defensive style which usually involves no weapons and utilises non-violence in an attempt to grapple or pin your opponent into submission. It’s derived from the Japanese word jūjutsu, meaning yielding technique (or art).
It’s not about landing hard punches or knocking people out, but about understanding anatomy, using your opponent’s own momentum against them and understanding specific holds to incapacitate. Basically, it’s as much a skill of the mind as it is of the body.
Jiu Jitsu found its way to the West and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (which predominantly focuses on ground moves) has become particularly popular. Hollywood mumbler Tom Hardy - of Mad Max and Venom fame - is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!
