Situated a stone's throw south of the White House in Washington D.C., the Lincoln Memorial is a grand ode to the 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln. Finished in 1922, its majestic Greek-inspired architecture encloses a statue of Honest Abe himself. Now, while Lincoln wasn’t actually 19 feet tall and didn’t weigh 175 tons, he was/is the tallest US president in history, standing at 6 '4.
The 36 columns on the outside walls of the memorial stand for the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. Engraved on its exterior are the names of the 48 states present during the memorial's completion, with a special plaque in the plaza recognising Alaska and Hawaii.
