All aboard the history train! The LNER Class A4 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley is no ordinary locomotive. It's the epitome of speed, style, and engineering finesse from the golden era of steam.
In 1959, this baby hit the postwar steam record speed of 112 miles per hour as it descended southward from Stoke Bank carrying a full train of passengers. Almost dubbed "Bittern" like its 4492 sibling, the 100th Gresley Pacific, 4498, got a last-minute name upgrade to honor its designer.
Although it originally sported blue livery with red and white linings, the arrival of British Railways saw Sir Nigel Gresley trading its former attire for a sophisticated dark blue ensemble, complemented by sharp black and white trims.
