Standing at 4,509 metres, Mount Wilhelm is the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea and the entire Oceania region, including Australia and New Zealand. Its peak serves as the meeting point for three provinces: Chimbu, Jiwaka, and Madang, making it the ultimate venue for high-altitude border disputes.
Named in 1888 by Hugo Zoller, a German newspaper correspondent who discovered the Bismarck Range, Mount Wilhelm honors his four children by naming the range's four highest peaks after them.
While undoubtedly picturesque, Wilhelm has a rather inconsiderate habit of getting in the way of aircraft. During WWII, an American plane discovered this the hard way.
