Found in the Naruto Strait, itself situated at the northeastern point of Tokushima Prefecture in Japan, Naruto Whirpools aren’t just regular whirpools that run around with their arms extended behind them, but rather a phenomenon caused by rushing water flowing through a narrow channel.

Water currents in the strait reach speeds of 20km/h, the fourth fastest in the world, with tourists and locals regularly attending observations of the disorderly water formations from ships and bridges around the area.

So impressive are the whirlpools that they have inspired new cuisine across Japan, with the recognisably pink-swirled Narutomaki being named after them, itself serving as inspiration for beloved anime protagonist Naruto Uzumaki’s name.
