Hamidou ben Ali, known as Raïs Hamidou, was a famous Algerian corsair – a term used to describe what were effectively state-sanctioned bandits in the Mediterranean Sea. Although he started training to become a tailor like his father, stories of Algerian corsairs ignited Hamidou’s thirst for adventure. At age 10, he began working aboard a pirate ship commanded by Raïs Memmou.
During his career, Raïs Hamidou became world-renowned for his exploits including the capturing of over 200 ships. He also took part in some battles and was key in the Regency’s victory against Tunis.
In 1815, he was killed in action by a carronade shot from USS Guerriere (not to be confused with gruyere, which can’t shoot cannons on account of being a cheese.)
