Snakes ain't got nothing on the Redback Spider. Native to Australia, this eight-legged terror holds the prestigious record for causing more envenomations than any other critter down under.
Snakes ain't got nothing on the Redback Spider. Native to Australia, this eight-legged terror holds the prestigious record for causing more envenomations than any other critter down under. The female of the species is responsible for almost all bites to humans - but in her defence, she isn't *trying* to hurt people, and mostly keeps to dark spaces or wall cavities.
Bizarrely, the redback spider is one of only two animals known where the male actively assists the female in sexual cannibalism, somersaulting to place his abdomen over the female's mouthparts. Apparently, he does this knowing that a female who has eaten a male is more likely to reject subsequent males. Fellas, it feels like this might be an insecurity / jealousy thing. Still, we admire your commitment.
