Smiley

The grandfather of the happy emoji, the Smiley traces its origins back to 1962 - specifically, the New York City radio station WMCA.

The grandfather of the happy emoji, the Smiley traces its origins back to 1962 - specifically, the New York City radio station WMCA. The station used the smiley as part of a marketing campaign, printing the symbol onto sweatshirts and giving them out to listeners who answered their phone with the words “WMCA Good Guys!”.

When stars like Patsy King and Mick Jagger started wearing the sweatshirts, the smiley went viral (or whatever the ‘60s equivalent of “viral” was). By 1963, 11,000 sweatshirts had been given away - but that was just the beginning. Several years later, sad-faced graphic designer Harvey Ross Ball drew a yellow happy face to raise morale at the State Mutual Life Assurance Company. His rendition was printed onto 50 million buttons and became world famous.
