What if a catastrophic disaster led to the loss of crops around the world? Don’t worry yourself too much, but if something did happen, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault would be able to provide some level of insurance.
It’s been called the Noah’s Ark of Plant Diversity – and with good reason.
Hidden deep inside a mountain on the remote island of the Svalbard archipelago, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, this seed vault stores and protects nearly 1 million samples of crop varieties from about 5,000 different species.
Even if you wanted to get in, the Global Seed Vault is practically impenetrable, and unless you have actual business there, you won’t be allowed inside.
