If you were a frog, what would you look for in a mate? If you said “excessive skin folds and a low metabolic rate”, the Titicaca Water Frog might be your perfect match.
If you were a frog, what would you look for in a mate? If you said “excessive skin folds and a low metabolic rate”, the Titicaca Water Frog might be your perfect match. Also known by the unfortunate nickname “Titicaca Scrotum Frog” due to its wrinkled body, this exotic species is considered the largest aquatic frog in the world with some individuals reaching up to 13 cm in length.
Sadly, numbers of the frog are dropping fast from over-harvestation for human consumption. While frogs may not be a delicacy, this species is considered to be an aphrodisiac when mixed with honey, the roots of a local plant, and several other products. It doesn’t help that trouts are always eating their tadpoles either.
