According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, our guy Vertumnus is all about the art of transformation.
Giuseppe Arcimboldo gave us Vertumnus in a salad guise, and frankly, it's spot on. According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, our guy Vertumnus is all about the art of transformation. Being the Roman deity of seasons, change and all things green and growing, dressing up as a fruit platter is pretty on-brand. But let's just say his shape-shifting shenanigans weren't always for noble causes.
In the first "exclusively" Latin tale, Vertumnus famously bamboozled Pomona by turning up as an old lady, gaining entry to her orchard and warning her of the dangers of rejecting a suitor to nudge her into a romance. But hey, people can change - it's literally in this god's name, with Vertumnus probably originating from the Etruscan "Voltumna," getting a Latin twist from "vertere," which means "to change."
