Just been bitten by a poisonous creature? What are you still doing here?! Call an ambulance!! While you wait for the paramedics, you may as well read up on the cure.
First developed in 1895 by French scientist Albert Calmette, Antivenom is an antibody product designed to neutralise the venom and save the life (or limb) of a patient. It’s made by injecting an animal like a horse or goat with a small amount of snake (or spider) venom. Next, the antibodies released by the animal’s immune system are harvested via bleeding. The blood serum is then purified to make pharmaceutical-grade antivenom. While antivenom can’t reverse the effects of venom once they’ve started, it can stop it from getting worse - provided you don’t get bitten by another snake during this time.
