With a diameter spanning wider than the Empire State is tall, Apple Park is the current headquarters for Apple Inc., housing more than 12,000 employees in a circular building affectionately referred to by the media as “The Spaceship”.
Designed in collaborative efforts between the late Steve Jobs, designer Jony Ive and established architects Foster and Partners, the campus utilises a massive array of solar panels on its roof, capable of providing a colossal 17 megawatts of power - enough to fuel the building to 75% capacity during peak daylight hours.
Though Steve Jobs did not live to see the opening of Apple Park in 2017, the campus consists of 80% green space and homes over 300 varieties of indigenous tree species, honoring Jobs’ vision of a corporate headquarters built to resemble a nature reserve.
Interestingly, the McIntosh species of apple, namesake for Apple’s Macintosh computer line, is curiously missing from the campus due to issues growing in Cupertino’s native arid climate.
