How fast do you have to be to outrun your problems? Ask the Black-Tailed Jackrabbit. This hare, misnamed as a rabbit, is a marvel of evolutionary design. Muscular hind legs can catapult the Black-Tailed Jackrabbit across the terrain with bursts of speed up to 40 miles per hour and propel it 10 feet in the air. It uses these impressive leaps and a zig-zag running style to leave predators, like coyotes, hungry and confused.
Found in the south and western parts of the United States as well as in Mexico, this hare can be identified by its greyish brown body and the white fur on its face. According to fossil evidence, ancestors of the Black-Tailed Jackrabbit were hopping around in North America around 2.5 million years ago!
