Off the coast of Mexico, on the island of Cozumel, lives the solitary Cozumel Raccoon, looking smaller and sadder than Baby Rocket in all the flashback scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This trash panda weighs only 3-4 kg, making it much smaller than your average raccoon from the mainland. Being the smallest species of raccoon in the world, it means that looking into their little bandit-masked-faces may absolutely melt your heart into a puddle. They’re freaking adorable.
However (time to get even sadder than GotG Vol. 3), these little guys can only be found on Cozumel and are considered critically endangered. We can all point the finger of blame at ourselves because it’s likely that the increase of tourism to the island is what is threatening these tiny raccoons. It’s estimated that there are less than 200 Cozumel Raccoons left in the world.
Since we don’t want to end on such a downer, here’s a weird fact to cheer you up/freak you out - Cozumel Raccoons can rotate their feet 180 degrees. This is supposedly for climbing trees but seems like a great trick to frighten the tourists off too.
