Regarded by many as the Puerto Rican Robin Hood, El Pirata Cofresí was a pirate whose career inspired stories, songs and poems for generations.
Born Roberto Cofresí y Ramírez de Arellano, this legendary pirate evaded capture by ships from Spain, Gran Colombia, the UK, Denmark, France and the U.S. He commanded several small-draft vessels, the most famous of which was called ‘Anne’, which he used to attack ships that didn’t fly the Royal Spanish flag.
Some Puerto Rican historians believe that Cofresí shared his spoils with the needy, hence the Robin Hood comparison. Some also believe that part of Cofresi’s treasure is still be hidden in the caves of Sabana Seca, close to a restaurant called “La Guarida del Pirata Cofresi”. Well? What are you waiting for?!
