The two were from different worlds: she was the priestess of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and he was just a guy from Abydos. Meanwhile, Hero lived in Sestos, on the other side of Hellespont.

Deeply in love but separated by a body of water, Leander would swim across the Hellespont to meet with his beloved each night, guided by the bright lights of the city. But one cloudy night, Leander lost his way and drowned. When Hero learned of Leander’s fate, she drowned herself and joined her lover in death.
