The Eurhinosaurus looked like a regular ichthyosaur: it had a big fish-like body, large eyes and both a dorsal and caudal fin. But this aquatic beast had a distinctive feature that set it apart from its sea-dwelling friends: a massive nose.

Like a sawfish, this humongous creature may have used its nose to search the seafloor for prey by swinging its upper jaw from side to side through vegetation. It’s also possible that it used its long beak to violently stab prey to death as swordfish do. If that wasn’t damning enough, the size of its fins also suggests that the Eurhinosaurus may have been one of the fastest marine reptiles of its time.
