Are You Afraid of the Dark? Settle down millennials, we’re not about to deep dive into the ‘90s horror series - we’re talking about Nyctophobia, the fear that turns night into a time of dread rather than rest.
Rooted deeply in the human psyche, this phobia is not just about the absence of light but what lurks unseen within it. As a survival instinct, it heightens our senses, preparing us for unseen threats hidden in the shadows. Sometimes called scotophobia or lygophobia, fear of the dark is one of the most common fears among kids between 6 and 12 years old.
Fortunately, like most phobias, nyctophobia can be treated with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and exposure therapy. In the short-term, investing in a good night light can help keep the demons at bay.
