If you happen upon a Flowing Hair Dollar, count yourself incredibly lucky: of the 1,758 produced, there are said to only be 140 or so coins in existence today. Naturally, these coins are worth a pretty penny: specifically, around $42,500 in average condition, or $70,000 for those in near-mint condition.
America’s first official silver dollar, the flowing hair dollar was engraved by Robert Scot to feature a side profile of Miss Liberty. For the reverse, Scot engraved an eagle motif, its wings surrounded by a laurel wreath with the inscription ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’.
The Flowing Hair dollar was first issued by the Federal Government in 1794, but only lasted until 1795, when it was replaced with the ‘draped bust’ design.
