Golden Tortoise Beetles can change colour depending on the season or even their mood using the liquid beneath their transparent shell.
Perhaps the most regal of all the bugs, the Golden Tortoise Beetle belongs to the Chrisomelidae – a vast family of around 37,000 bugs who love munching on leaves. Also known as the Golden Ladybug, this dazzling beetle has a domed body with hardened covers that protect the bug’s flying wings.
Entomologists suspect this feature allows them to press themselves close to a leaf surface and hunker down when under attack from a predator. Like a tortoise, the beetle tucks all of its body parts in and withdraws inside its dome-like cover for shelter.
However, all that glitters is not gold – well, not always. You see, Golden Tortoise Beetles can change colour depending on the season or even their mood using the liquid beneath their transparent shell.
