It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in Greenland, and with good reason: Ilulissat Icefjord is a living museum of the last ice age, with the oldest ice is estimated to be 250,000 years old. History aside, this impressive ice-stream boasts icebergs the size of skyscrapers, casually parading 250 km north of the Arctic Circle.
The star attraction? The Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the world's fastest glaciers, hustling at a brisk 40 m per day. Icebergs break off the face of the glacier and make their way down the Icefjord, which in places is more than 1000m deep. Thanks to ease of access, scientists have been studying this frosty phenomenon for over 250 years, mesmerised by its ever-changing icy landscape.
