Every year, over 300,000 tourists make the trek to the Swabian Alps to check out Hohenzollern Castle. It isn’t the original – that one, built in the early 11th century, was the home base for the Hohenzollern family, who were the Kings of Prussia back then. Unfortunately, it was totally destroyed in 1423 after a long, ten-month siege.
The second version of the castle turned into a safe spot for the Catholic Swabian Hohenzollerns during the Thirty Years’ War. By the time the 19th century rolled around, it had fallen into disrepair. King Frederick William (Friedrich Wilhelm II) of Prussia fell in love with its charm and wanted to fix it up. The castle we see now is more like a tribute to those times, but it’s still pretty impressive.
