A word of advice: if Lady Bertilak asks you for a glove, or offers you a ring or a magical silk belt, just say no. Because it’s a test, and it will determine your fate.
A word of advice: if Lady Bertilak asks you for a glove, or offers you a ring or a magical silk belt, just say no. Because it’s a test, and it will determine your fate. This is what happened to Sir Gawain in the famous 14th century tale ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’.
While staying at their castle, Gawain was asked by the host, Lord Bertilak, to exchange any gifts he was given for the spoils of Bertilak’s hunting trips each day. But Gawain was naughty. Although he rejected the ring, he took the green girdle from Lady Bertilak and kept it a secret. Upon realising the error of his ways, Gawain kept the belt as a reminder of his sin. Or he just liked how it looked on him.
