While landlords might not have the best reputation, Houtu is one we can all appreciate. Originally the Chinese deity of all land and earth, Houtu eventually became one of the Four Heavenly Ministers in Taoism, along with Jade Emperor, Gouchen Emperor and Ziwei Emperor.
As the overlord of various land-related gods, Houtu shaped the earth's landscape, ensuring that everything ran smoothly for the inhabitants of the world. While legendary king Yu the Great is celebrated for excellent flood control, some versions of this story say the accomplishment was all down to Houtu, who provided Yu with the Yellow River Map and divine guidance through a messenger bird. In turn, Yu was able to open a channel to the east, allowing the Yellow River to flow into the sea.
