We can all relate to The Gingerbread Man, a plucky baked boy from the fairytale of the same name who escapes several pursuers until eventually being devoured by a hungry fox. Sometimes, life be like that.
Fortunately, the Gingerbread Man got his moment of glory in the 2001 kids classic ‘Shrek’ when he teased Lord Farquad with the Muffin Man rhyme. The story has also been adapted for different audiences - for example, Eric Kimmel’s ‘The Runaway Tortilla’ about a desert-roving tortilla who has to avoid donkeys, rattlesnakes and buckaroos.
There’s also the Chinese New Year tale, The Runaway Rice Cake by Ying Chang Compestine, Peter Armour’s ‘Stop That Pickle!’ and Leslie Kimmelman’s Hanukkah version called The Runaway Latkes.
