Remember the harrowing scene in The Revenant where Leonardo DiCaprio goes head to head with a terrifying grizzly bear? That actually happened: not to Leo of course, but to Hugh Glass, an American frontiersman, fur trapper, trader, hunter and explorer.
Before the bear, Pennsylvania-born Hugh Glass escaped pirates, a cannibal tribe and a band of pawnee indians who brutally killed his travelling companion. In 1823, while on a fur trading expedition in South Dakota, Glass was severely mauled by a grizzly bear. His companions abandoned him, believing he wouldn’t survive.
Yet, once again, Glass refused to die. He set his own broken leg, wrapped himself in bear hide and limped over 200 miles to Fort Kiowa to seek revenge against those who left him behind.
