Ranging from Alaska to Mexico, the Ruby Octopus is the most commonly-occurring shallow-water octopus on the North American West Coast. Don't be fooled by its squishy appearance - this octopus is a keen predator with a diverse palate. In labs, it’s been caught red-handed feasting on gastropods, bivalves, crabs, barnacles and fish. Once the Ruby Octopus has satisfied its appetite, it becomes a diligent food collector, stashing away its prey and meticulously stacking the shells to create a protective wall around its home.
Food aside, the Ruby octopus is a master problem-solver. Just give them different clams to crack open, and they'll show you their repertoire of opening techniques, adapting their methods based on the clam's level of stubbornness.
