The Powerful Owl may sound like a lesser-known superhero - however, this bird is anything but underwhelming. Native to Eastern Australia, it's the continent's largest owl, flaunting a wingspan of 135cm (that's equivalent to the height of a nine year old human, FYI).

This impressive bird is a skilled hunter, preying on tree-dwelling mammals like gliders and possums, but it won't turn its beak up at bats, rodents, rabbits, wallabies, or even young koalas.

If you're impressed by its strength, wait till you hear its call. The haunting cry of the powerful owl can be heard the loudest during the Autumn breeding period. Listen out for a slow, deep double hoot - and if you’re an arboreal mammal, take it as your cue to run/glide away.
