Imagine the worst guy at the pub. Now imagine that guy is legally allowed to own a cannon. That’s Roche Braziliano, a Dutch-born pirate who terrorised Port Royal, Jamaica. When he wasn’t raiding ships, he was forcing strangers to drink with him at swordpoint.

Roche spent his entire career ensuring no Spaniard had a good day, which at one point involved roasting captives over an open fire – completely unnecessary, really. He became such a terror that Spanish mothers turned his name into a bedtime threat. Eventually, the Spanish had enough and locked him up, but Roche scammed his way out with a fake letter.

After 1671, he vanished, and all of Central America collectively hoped he’d fallen overboard and met a well-deserved end in a shark’s stomach.
