Sea Whip

I know what it sounds like, but the Sea Whip isn't a car for underwater street racing. However, it's still pretty badass.

I know what it sounds like, but the Sea Whip isn't a car for underwater street racing. However, it's still pretty badass.

Found on rocks at depths down to 20 metres along the western fringes of the Atlantic Ocean, Sea Whip is so-called for its long, flexible appendages. These “whips” are actually a colony of tiny carnivorous polyps that grow upon one another in a continuous single stem. When unsuspecting zooplankton float by, these polyps deploy their saw-toothed tentacles to seize upon their prey.

Unlike its coral cousins, Sea Whips take a different approach to reproduction. They spawn externally, releasing eggs and sperm into the water. The resulting larvae enjoy a brief adventure, floating freely for 3-20 days before settling down on a hard surface and facing the coral equivalent of paying rent and doing taxes.
