The Vampire Squid isn’t a fanged, blood sucking kraken of the deep as its name would suggest.
While the Vampire Squid isn’t a fanged, blood sucking kraken of the deep as its name would suggest, it does have bioluminescent organs and a unique oxygen metabolism that allows it to thrive in the darkest parts of the ocean. Maxing out at a modest 30 centimetres, this cephalopod curiosity rocks a webbed cloak connecting its eight arms, plus two retractable filaments that scream "I'm not like other mollusks."
Too emo for the popular octopus or squid cliques, it struts solo in its own order, Vampyromorphida - the last of its kind. Discovered in 1898 by Carl Chun during the Valdivia Expedition, this trendsetter comes in two chic shades: velvety jet-black or pale red, perfect for blending into the inky abyss or standing out at deep-sea soirées.
