One of the most widespread monkey species across Africa, the Vervet Monkey is social by nature, living in troops of up to 70 members. Pack mentality has led the species to developing a whole dictionary of calls just for different predators and situations. They even have a special code for humans!
While they may not be our closest cousins, vervet monkeys actually play a key role in our understanding of human behaviour. They share a lot of our same health issues, like high blood pressure, anxiety, and a hankering for happy hour. And just like some humans, vervets also have a soft spot for our feline friends. Just like us, vervets have been recorded acting out of spite, like destroying another troop’s food supply if they’ve been wronged by them before.
