Cerussite is a hidden gem, quite literally; a rare mineral with a sparkling allure and a resemblance to freshly fallen snow. Sure, you can’t make snowmen from it, and a snowball fight would probably end in tears, but its crystals, transparent to translucent, often form in star-shaped clusters or take on the appearance of delicate, frost-like needles.
It doesn’t fall from the sky, but rather forms by the oxidation of galena (a mineral consisting of lead sulphide) in carbonated waters. The mineral gets its name from the Latin word ‘cerussa’ meaning “white lead.” Beyond its aesthetic charm, cerussite is also an important ore of lead, and its high refractive index makes it a favourite among gem collectors.
