Strutting its stuff 16 to 19 million years ago, Heracles Inexpectatus is New Zealand's prehistoric avian powerhouse. Weighing in around 7 kilograms, Heracles was double the mass of the heaviest known parrot, the kakapo. In other words, this is one parrot you wouldn’t want perched on your shoulder.
This feathered giant was less "Polly want a cracker" and more "Polly want the whole darn box." Despite having wings, Heracles was likely grounded, trading flight for might. Then again, who needs flight when you're built like a feathered tank?
Standing at a whopping 90 centimetres tall, Heracles Inexpectatus was about the height of your average 3-year-old. With legs like tree trunks and a curved beak that could crack coconuts for breakfast, we’d wager Heracles would win in a fight.
