Like a sugar-charged toddler throwing a tantrum, Mount Bromo is the youngest volcano in the Tengger Massif, but one of the most active in East Java, Indonesia.
Like a sugar-charged toddler throwing a tantrum, Mount Bromo is the youngest volcano in the Tengger Massif, but one of the most active in East Java, Indonesia. Named after the Hindu god of creation, Brahma, the volcano sits inside a wide expanse known as the ‘Sea of Sand’.
Despite the barren terrain, the area is home to around 90,000 Tengger people, a Hindu ethnic minority in the predominantly Muslim Indonesian archipelago. If you fancy conquering your fear of heights and fear of volcanoes in one fell swoop, you can visit the terrifying 2,300-metre peak, famous for its magnificent sunrise views.
A word of caution, though: the “guardrails” protecting you from the churning pit of destruction aren’t very high, and end after about twenty metres in either direction.
