A small bird with a distinctive call, the beautiful Brazilian Ruby is a species of hummingbird found in gardens and parks of eastern Brazil. So-named for the "ruby" coloured chin that can be seen on males at certain angles, the Brazilian Ruby is a common and easily observed hummingbird that measures about 12cm in length.
Although sometimes placed in the genus ‘Heliodoxa’, this hummingbird is actually the only member of the genus ‘Clytolaema’. This genus name combines the Ancient Greek klutos meaning "glorious" and laimos meaning "throat". If you ever get a chance to hear its song, it really is iconic – but probably not to everyone’s tastes.
Like all hummingbirds, the Brazilian Ruby can go into a state of torpor to conserve energy when food is scarce.
